Benefits of Affiliation and Membership in the AWMA
By Doug Thompson, Vice President, Supervisory
PECG has many members in engineering and specialist classifications who work in the fields or air and waste management.
The principal professional organization to which these members belong or wish to belong is the Air and Waste Management
Association, or AWMA (http://www.awma.org). Founded in 1907 by Canadian and American smoke inspectors, AWMA's members
include scientists, engineers, policymakers, attorneys, and consultants who work for governments, corporations,
universities, consulting organizations, and law firms. AWMA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional organization
that provides training, information, and networking opportunities to more than 9000 environmental professionals
in 65 countries. The Association's goals are to strengthen the environmental profession, expand scientific and
technological responses to environmental concerns, and assist professionals in critical environmental decision
making to benefit society.
Many of the engineers and specialists in Fort Sutter section work for environmental and health agencies and would
be better suited by membership in AWMA rather than ASCE. Fort Sutter should move to support membership in either
organization by PECG.
